Florida State University said in a statement she was married to an eminent professor of psychology who had been teaching in its London Study Program.
The knife attack occurred on Wednesday on the street of Russell Square, a tourist spot near the British Museum.
He was also charged with five counts of attempted murder in relation to the five other individuals who were injured.
FSU students had already left the program for the summer, said James Pitts, director of FSU International Programs.
Florida State University president John Thrasher said today: “There are no words to express our heartache over this awful tragedy”.
Authorities identified the woman Thursday as Darlene Horton and said she and her husband were set to leave London to return to the United States just hours after the attack began in London’s Russell Square.
Police arrested a 19-year-old Norwegian national of Somali ancestry about 10:39 p.m.
“We continue to focus our lines of inquiry on mental health while retaining an open mind regarding the motive”, police said.
It said six people were treated at the scene, and that the woman later died. Apparently, he was just stabbing people randomly – it’s disgusting. According to BBC News, police said there were no evidence that the suspect had radicalized.
Four of the wounded victims were discharged from hospital on Thursday, while the British man remained in a serious but stable condition with a stab wound to his stomach.
“So far we have found no evidence of radicalization or anything that would suggest the man in our custody was motivated by terrorism”.
Rowley added that the attack seemed to be a “spontaneous attack and that the victims were selected at random”.
Norwegian police confirmed that the suspect is a Norwegian citizen who was “registered as having emigrated from Norway in 2002”.
The 40-year-old Australian man and 23 year old Australian woman who were injured in the attack have requested that their privacy be respected, according to DFAT.
Metropolitan Police’s Rowley said today there is an “increased presence on the streets of officers, including armed officers”.
