In One Day, Obama Shortens Life Sentences of 67 Prisoners

Almost 200 of the sentences Obama has commuted during his eight years in office were life sentences.

While the majority of prisoners being released fall into the “nonviolent-drug-offender” category, a search of these criminals in the commutation database returned 156 hits for “firearms”.

Eugene Ernst Jackson of Baltimore was sentenced in 2002 to life in prison for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute narcotics, distribution and possession of narcotics and aiding and abetting.

67 of the commutations are for people with life sentences, again with nearly all held in prison for nonviolent drug crimes.

The 214 inmates freed represent the most commutations in a single day since at least 1900, Eggleston said. He was originally sentenced to 235 months imprisonment; four years supervised release on November 22, 2002.

Thomas Raymond Ross was convicted by a federal jury on charges of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine, conspiracy to distribute the meth precursor pseudoephedrine and distributing pseudoephedrine.

Dennis’ sentence has been commuted to expire on August 3, 2018.

Dennis, 58, was convicted of possession with intent to distribute cocaine base and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Such is the case with numerous reduced sentences. Some of those granted commutations will be released immediately after processing, while others will have to serve more time.

Two of the 214 sentences commuted are listed as residents of Fort Myers, FL.

Sixty-seven of those inmates were serving life sentences.

Some of those pardoned on Wednesday will have their sentences reduced, while others will be released from prison. Some of the commutations include conditions, including enrollment in a residential drug treatment program. That’s more commutations than the previous nine presidents combined. In Wednesday’s batch, 67 convicts were serving life sentences. Still, some are violent offenders. But, as his final term comes to a close, The White House has reported that Obama will continue commuting certain prison sentences throughout his remaining months in office.
