A machete-wielding attacker who injured two police officers in Charleroi in Belgium on Saturday has died of his wounds after police shot him at the scene, state broadcaster VTM reported.

Two police officers have been attacked with a machete outside a police station in Belgium, local authorities have said.
Paul Magnette, mayor of Charleroi, which is located about 35 miles south of Brussels, said the police checkpoint prevented the attacker from reaching the main building and causing more havoc.
Witnesses said they heard a series of gunshots near the police station this afternoon.
Belgian police announced in a message on Twitter after the incident that the man wielding the weapon had died of his wounds after being shot by police.
Belgian authorities said investigations were on-going to determine whether the attack was the action of a lone wolf or whether he had links with worldwide jihadi terrorists. The attack occurred in front of Charleroi police station. “We are following the situation closely”, he said.
“I condemn the attack in Charleroi with force”, Michel tweeted in Dutch.
The assailant “hasn’t been identified yet”, Prime Minister Charles Michel told the TV station RTL-TVI.
Belgian Interior minister, Jan Jambon, has confirmed the attack on Twitter, describing the events at Charleroi as “despicable”. Her colleague suffered minor injuries.
Charleroi was used as a base for some of the jihadists that launched attacks in Paris in November past year and Brussels in March.

In March, more than 30 people were killed in terrorist attacks across the Belgian capital. In the worst, in the French city of Nice, 84 people were killed.
