Roof has been housed at the Charleston County detention centre since being returned from North Carolina a day after the killings on 17 June 2015 of nine parishioners during a Bible study at Emanuel AME Church.

According to the Charleston County Clerk of Court records, online, Stafford was released at 8:27 p.m. In that setting, he is charged with nine counts of murder. He was indicted May 10 on federal charges of violating Scott’s rights while acting under the color of law, lying to investigators and using a firearm in a violent crime. On social media, though, dozens of posts showed that people were rushing to donate to Stafford’s account-to the point where the website was experiencing problems keeping up.
