Two female officers were injured after being attacked by a machete-wielding man near the police station in the Belgian city of Charleroi, the authorities said.

One of the female officers suffered grievous injuries on the face, while the other officer suffered minor injuries.

Charleroi police said the attacker was shot and killed, while the two victims were out of danger.
Like neighboring France, Belgium has been battered by terrorism in recent months, culminating in attacks on Brussels’ airport and a metro station in March that left 32 people dead.

Interior Minister Jan Jambon called it a “vile act” in a tweet and expressed his support for the police officers, their families and their colleagues.
Michel said the identity of the assailant wasn’t immediately known.
Paul Magnette, mayor of the city in southern Belgium, says the checkpoint succeeded in preventing the attacker from reaching the building and causing more havoc. Magnette said that in the wake of the incident, Belgian authorities have begun discussing whether security for police facilities and officers should be reinforced further.
Numerous jihadists responsible for the Paris attack in November 2015, in which 130 people died, were also residing in Belgium.
The police have established a security perimeter around the site of the attack.

The attack happened outside the city’s police headquarters. “We are closely monitoring the situation”.
