Clemens wears ‘Player’ jersey; Padres beat Phils 9-7

“It’s awesome I’m having the success I am having”. Jeremy Hellickson, who most never figured would be making this start for the Phillies after his name was so heavily rumored at the deadline, came through with a Quality Start.

“Before he went up, he put more pine tar on his bat than a lot of guys use in a year”, Padres manager Andy Green said. I’ve seen minor-leaguers listed as UNKNOWN on the scoreboard in spring training, and heck, I’ve even seen Rajai Davis wear Gene Lamont’s jersey for a game, but a generic PLAYER 91 jersey?

The Padres’ Friedrich allowed four runs on five hits with four strikeouts over seven innings.

“That was good for a laugh”, Green said. “He paid for that pitch (to Rupp) but other than that he was really good all day”. Wil Myers leads San Diego with 116 hits, Alexei Ramirez has 36 RBI and Derek Norris has 12 home runs. Travis Jankowski followed with a single and appeared to stretch it to a double, but after Jankowski was ruled safe on Tyler Goeddel’s throw, the call was overturned because Jankowski took his hand off the bag before calling time.

The Phillies are 2-5 in their last 7 during game 3 of a series and 1-4 in Eickhoffs last 5 starts.

Rupp upped the Phillies lead to 4-2 in the sixth. The most productive batter for the San Diego Padres is Melvin Upton Jr. who averaged 2.34 hits+walks+RBI. Two innings later, he delivered with his 18th double to score Franco from second base. Hellickson then balked both runners up 90 feet and Jankowski came in on Jose Rondon’s run-scoring single.

The Padres would pull within one run of the Phillies later in the game during two separate occasions.

Myers’ homer was his 21st of the season and his 15th at Petco Park, which ties a franchise record.

NOTES: Padres RHP Colin Rea will soon undergo Tommy John surgery and miss all of the 2017 season. The Marlins claimed the Padres weren’t forthright with Rea’s medical reports and the Padres agreed to reacquire Rea.

Jake Thompson is the Phillies top pitching prospect making his first Major League Baseball start in this game. Thompson will become the third player acquired from the Texas Rangers in the Cole Hamels trade to make their debuts, joining right-handers Alec Asher and Jerad Eickhoff.

Paul Clemens will take the mound for the Padres and is doing his level best to make an impression while in the starting rotation. Paul’s current issue is giving up the longball rather prolifically; in his last start on Sunday, Paul coughed up his third home run in 13 innings pitched. Friedrich (4-7) struck out four and walked no one on the night.
