After a fairly disappointing start at the Rio Olympics, India will look to bounce back on day 2 as the Women’s hockey team returns after 36 years, and Dipa Karmakar makes her much-awaited appearance.
Ms Karmakar, 22, had scored 14.833 in april earlier this year as her best effort to finish first in the women’s vaults finals and win the gold in a rare such feat by an Indian gymnast in a global event. She will hope to peak at the right time.
It was a poor first day for the Indian contingent in the 2016 Rio Olympics as the shooters, Tennis players, Table Tennis players and weightlifiters drew a blank. She also reached the final round of the 2015 World Championships and finished fifth.
The archery team finished seventh in the ranking round, while individually all of them advanced for the round of 32 on Friday. Russian Federation are already in the quarters by virtue of having finished 2nd when qualifying. Placed in an extremely tough group with Argentina (World No. 2), Australia (3), United States of America (5), and England (7), India, ranked 13th in the world and the lowest of the teams in the group, kick off their campaign against the Japanese, ranked 10th.
Sidhu, who is the 2013 World Cup gold medalist, will be aiming for a strong show while Manavjit, who is a two-time World Cup gold medalist, will be aiming to turn India’s fortunes in the trap qualification, an event that India has never done well in. The top four teams in each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
The event was also held in Rio which is where the Olympics will be held.

A total of 98 women will take part in the qualification for the four individual exercise events as well as the all-round competition. “My only attempt will be that I give my best shot, and I shall perform to the best of my ability”, she signed off.
