The flurry of negative reviews led more than 17,000 people on Wednesday to sign an online Change.org petition calling for Rotten Tomatoes to be shut down. “I think that would be great”, he said, “to dive in deeper to the Joker and expand the story and to learn a bit more about this sick and twisted – but lovely – unusual man”. “You know, I just don’t think they like superhero movies”, Cara Delevingne, who plays the Enchantress, told Reuters at the film’s London premiere. So, no matter what the critics thought, it seems that Suicide Squad may just have a chance.
While prowling the street with these characters, nothing really ever feels at stake and that’s the major problem with the film. Can’t remember the last time I liked one of these more than most critics. So in short, callous government official Amanda Waller comes up with the idea to use a bunch of supervillians – Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and Captain Boomerang among them – as a task force against threats too big for normal military or police to handle. Diablo and Killer Croc were the only ones who were strikingly different, and all the latter did was swim in the sewers.
But as long as they kept giving me the banter between the characters, I ended up forgiving them. If only the foundation on which it tries to stand on was pretty solid. If anything, Suicide Squad has spawned a whole new Joker/Harley fandom (sorry other “squad” members, maybe next time). Worldwide, the movie has also gotten a high number of viewers and positive feedback. But in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice fashion, the audience score for the movie is 74%.
The movie is rated PG-13 for profanity and violence.
By mid June, ComScore’s PreAct noticed that Suicide Squad was already owning the social media conversation after dropping character posters and debuting the Twenty One Pilots music video “Heathens” off the new soundtrack with new footage.
