This comes as the virus continues to spread.
Both women contracted Zika “after spending time in a country where the virus is endemic”, according to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
This outbreak is the first time the disease has been spread in the continental US through infected mosquitoes.
More information on how to avoid Zika infection can found online.
Mosquito-control efforts in Wynwood have been hard because it’s a mixed-use area, where industrial sites are located next to a blend of residences and businesses, Frieden said earlier this week.
“When the mosquito larvae in the water eat the protein, it destroys their digestive system and they die”, said Karen Schultz, a vector control technician.
The CDC issued an unprecedented travel warning Monday, advising pregnant women and their partners not to travel to a small community just north of downtown Miami, where Zika is actively circulating.
Two instances of laboratory-confirmed infection with Zika virus have been identified in Hardin County residents, according to the Lincoln Trail District Health Department. In fact, one neighborhood in Miami is the only spot in the continental United States to have Zika cases caused by local mosquito bites.
But the new information casts doubt over the effectiveness of weeks of intensive mosquito-control efforts in South Florida and raises questions about tourism in the state, which drew more than 100 million visitors past year.
“We are participating in the CDC birth registry to follow patients who may have been exposed to Zika while pregnant”, Chan said.
