The previous record-holder was 2014’s Disney-Marvel smash “Guardians of the Galaxy”, which scored $11.2 million in its Thursday night opening.
While The Hollywood Reporter also shares its verdicts on the already released DC Extended Universe movies like “Iron Man”, “Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice”, and “Man of Steel”. By the end of the weekend, Ayer’s film is likely to hit $145-150 million total, which should allow some execs at Warner Bros. and DC to rest a little easier tonight, bundled with a healthy $64.6 million opening overseas for the film.
“I think David Bowie is probably an inspiration for nearly anything you could do creatively”, the Suicide Squad star says, revealing a deep admiration for the late musician.
Ayer does a nice job of introducing us to Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker and company, although those three are the most compelling.
If there’s anything good to be said about “Suicide Squad”, it’s that the few characters given depth were done well. There was all this hate that avid fans have channeled against Rotten Tomatoes for the negative reviews of Suicide Squad. The worst reviews came from Variety, The Washington Post, The New York Times, IGN and Vulture. She’s deeply flawed and doesn’t make the best choices, but that’s precisely why she’s one of the most fascinating female characters in comics.
Leo Grant Logan: I don’t see a tie happening for both DC movies this year because there are far worse films that were out than them. Especially during her seduction by “The Joker” from the “Batman” comics, played here by Jared Leto, who somehow manages to make the part his own even though the late Heath Ledger earned an Oscar for it. Ayer’s film follows a group of unsafe comic book villains – played by Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Jay Hernandez (El Diablo) and Cara Delevingne (Enchantress) – who are recruited to fight off a deadly threat. Suicide Squad was released worldwide in 57 countries covering nearly 70% of the market.
