Earlier police had said that Rajan was upset with the two articles written by Dey that purportedly portrayed him “as an ageing gangster”, and then suspected to have ordered his elimination.

Mumbai: The CBI on Friday filed a supplementary chargesheet against extradited mafia don Chhota Rajan Nikhalje and another person for the 2011 killing of journalist Jyotirmoy Dey, an official said here.
Underworld gangster Chhota Rajan.
Rajan, who was reportedly hiding in Malaysia, had called Dey for a meeting but the journalist refused, CBI says. His arrest was on the basis of an Interpol red-corner notice issued against him way back in 1995 for committing criminal acts such as murder, running an organised crime syndicate, conspiracy etc.
According to the chargesheet, “Dey was going to expose Rajan’s fake patriotic mask that he had used to secure himself and accumulate wealth for his family”. About the book, the CBI has stated that the book talks about how Rajan had no concern for the people who gave their lives for him to reach where “he is today”.
Dey was planning to write another two books before leaving journalism, and he had met several people for these book and visited Philippines and other countries. “We would provide a copy of the chargesheet to the accused without the names of witnesses”. The police had made Rateshwar a key witness in the case.
Forensic reports showed that the recorded voice sample of Rajan matches with the voice in the conversation, it says. The agency said that he is accused of supplying global sim cards to other accused on behest of Rajan.
Last month, adjourning the hearing, the MCOCA court had said it would go ahead with framing of charges as per the charge-sheet earlier filed by Mumbai police’s crime branch if the CBI failed to do so by August 5.
Rajan was arrested at Bali airport in Indonesia on 25 October past year and deported to India.
He is facing around 70 cases in Maharashtra, all now handed over to CBI.
Another chargesheet was filed against journalist Jigna Vora the next year.
Dey, a veteran crime reporter, was shot dead near his residence at Hiranandani Gardens in Powai on June 11, 2011, by motorcycle-borne shooters, allegedly at Rajan’s command.
They include: Rohith Joseph alias Satish Kalia, who allegedly fired at Dey from close range, Anil Waghmode, Nilesh Shedge, Abhijit Shinde, Arun Dake, Sachin Gaikwad, Deepak Sisodia, Joseph Paulson and Mangesh Agwane. Vora, accused of instigating Rajan against Dey owing to her own professional rivalry, is now out on bail.

CBI in the cahrgesheet claims that they have matched the voice samples of Rajan and Jigna Vora with their conversation part of murder conspiracy. “The accused devised techniques… so that their nefarious activities could not be intercepted by police and other intelligence agencies”, the CBI claims.
