Hope Solo booed over Zika comments in USWNT win

“I think that’s something hopefully they will put behind them and realise that Hope has apologised to the Brazilian people”, USA coach Jill Ellis said of the fans.

“Over the past few months, I’ve done a lot of research and spoken to a number of infectious disease specialists”, Solo told Sports Illustrated. And it’s not something I just spoke about without getting educated on.

In the hills that hug Maracana Stadium, many Brazilians saw the flash and glitz of the opening ceremony for the Olympics from rooftops with exposed wiring and water pipes, amid trash-filled streets separated from the.

The three-time Olympic medalist has been very vocal about the unmanageable Zika risks while playing in Rio. After arriving in Brazil, she blamed the us media for being “really tough” on the people of Brazil, then tried to praise them as nice, genuine and warm people. She’ll be the first goalkeeper in history to reach the milestone in global play – no small feat. Solo will be making her 192nd start and seeking her 102nd shutout, both US goalkeeper records. First she said she didn’t want to go to Brazil, but in May she said she’d “begrudgingly” attend – but wouldn’t leave her hotel room outside of practice and games. It got so out of hand that U.S. Sen. The 200th cap was Solo’s latest accomplishment in a 16-year worldwide career.

Last month, Solo became the first goalkeeper with 100 global shutouts when the United States defeated South Africa 1-0 at Chicago’s Soldier Field. “Zika!” was also yelled at her during the game.

Solo’s best course of action here is to take it all in stride, and that’s what she seems to be doing. She also scored in the opener against New Zealand.

“Hope is obviously such an experienced player”. Unfortunately, she thought a Sorry If You Were Offended non-apology was the way to do it.

Along the way she’s vocally advocated for women’s rights.

Lloyd, the reining World Player of the Year, put Jill Ellis’ side ahead after only nine minutes, sending a looping header into the net following a tidy cross from Tobin Heath. She has also been outspoken in matters both large (equal pay for women athletes) and small (her dismal performance on Dancing With The Stars).

Ms Solo, 35, posted an image of herself kitted out in mosquito protection gear before she travelled to Rio for the games. “Get your own! #Zikaproof #Road to Rio” on her Twitter account.

After Wednesday’s match, Solo said she heard the fans chanting at her, but couldn’t understand what they were saying. “If I compare the Chinese team to the French team, Chinese women work harder and they complain much less”, Bini said earlier this week.

Even as she repelled shot after shot on Saturday, the chants continued, and were more noticeable than they were Wednesday.

For now, all that drama is outside noise.
