Highlights from the Black Hat hacker conference

Hillary Clinton’s campaign will hold a fundraiser in Las Vegas tomorrow at the Black Hat conference, a computer security convention for people interested in hacking and information security.

Attendees will hear a discussion of cyber policy issues by Jeff Moss, the founder of the Black Hat and DEF CON security conferences, Jake Braun, a former senior security consultant for the Department of Homeland Security, and Michael Sulmeyer, director of the Cyber Security Project at the Harvard Kennedy School. Together, the trio make the week a major event in the cybersecurity world. The Democratic National Committee recently revealed that it had been hacked, and some experts believe it is linked to the Russian government.

“This event was organized by supporters without any involvement from the campaign”, says a campaign representative.

It was unclear if members of the Clinton campaign would be attending any of the events for DefCon.

Should you want to grab one, take note of the various prices: for young professionals they cost $100, while a host committee ticket is much heftier at $2,700.

“Black Hat is a nonpartisan platform for the sharing of research and ideas-and is not affiliated with any political party, nor do we support or sanction such events”, said Jamie Miller, a spokesperson for Black Hat.

Those in the Jewish community who are seen in black hats (some even cocked at a rakish tilt) typically also don traditional garb like long black coats and wear payes; a slightly different look than the typical “Dungeons and Dragons“/ “Mr Robot”/ Silicon Valley crew that the event draws. According to her website, she will be fundraising with tech leaders in San Francisco. The fundraiser comes just days after reports emerged that Clinton’s own campaign was hacked.
