Jets QB Smith ‘sucker-punched’ by teammate

The once starting quarterback suffered a broken jaw and is out now 6-10 weeks, while Ikemefuna Enemkpali was fired by the Jets. Enemkpali, a linebacker who was released by the Jets after the incident, issued a statement through representatives to Dennis Waszak of the Associated Press apologizing for Tuesday’s events.

Smith said “My only goal is to heal quickly and get back to playing with my teammates so I can be the best quarterback possible for the Jets”.

“It had nothing to do with football”, Bowles said. He (Smith) got cold-cocked, sucker punched, whatever you want to call it, in the jaw. He has a broken jaw, fractured jaw, requires some surgery.

The Jets will likely now lean on veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, which means the Patriots could face him in their Week 7 matchup. It’s not clear what the fight was about, but it wasn’t football, and it was apparently “something childish”, says the coach, per Deadspin. We may add or not add another quarterback.

This isn not what Todd Bowles envisioned when he dreamt of being an NFL head coach.

Smith has 34 interceptions and 41 total turnovers in his first two seasons, but new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey was impressed with his progress this summer.

If you’re upset about the fact that we haven’t had a New York Jets-y headline recently, Tuesday must have felt like Christmas. I can talk to you guys after practice because I have meetings and then practice. “You don’t walk up to a man and punch him in the face”. Enemkpali during a locker room spat, the team confirms. However, in the last few games of the 2014 season, he showed some progress. He was suspended in 2011 at Louisiana Tech for allegedly punching an off-duty police officer.

To replace Enemkpali on the roster, the Jets signed cornerback Javier Arenas, who has played five NFL seasons with Kansas City, Arizona and Atlanta.
