Do Critics Have it Out for DC Movies?

It is expected to make more than $125 million across the entire weekend, and despite some negative reviews, it is certain to become the biggest grossing August release of all time.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to point out what’s wrong with Suicide Squad.

That said, Warner Bros. will certainly be hoping that millions of people beyond “hardcore DC fans” go see Suicide Squad. Most movies based on comic books fail to impress me, but I really liked “Suicide Squad”. Jared Leto, fresh off his Oscar win for “Dallas Buyers Club”, would be the latest actor to don the Joker’s makeup. Cheers to the Suicide Squad cast and crew, because hey: We love rooting for the underdog, even if the underdog is a movie critics think is as awful as the crimes its bad guys-gone-good commit. It stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, and Ben Affleck. In a bit of a surprise, most of these characters simply fade into the background, ceding the limelight to Will Smith and Margot Robbie. Suicide Squad quickly degenerates into a bloated CGI mess involving a witch named the Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) who longs to be worshipped by the entire population.

Of the top five biggest August openings, three (“Guardians of the Galaxy”, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, and “Straight Outta Compton”) have come in the last two years.

This motley collection of villains and metahumans with supernatural powers should have been a lot of fun to watch, as the bad guys bounced off each other, threatening to explode into violence at a moment’s notice. Judd Apatow and Mike Birbiglia are particularly confused by their practices, specifically regarding the rating of Suicide Squad compared to the comedy Don’t Think Twice.

It can be noted that some “Suicide Squad” scenes were reshot for about $22 million in the wake of scathing reviews that injured “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” for being too dark and serious.

Cara is now coming to the film’s defence, accusing critics of not valuing superhero movies.

“Opening day box office should be mostly bulletproof in this case”, Robbins said. The Warner Bros. film now has a 27 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 41.
