“I’ve had quite a few messages (from supporters) – I was just hoping to make the finals so they could watch me”.
“The flight of the targets is a lot different with the new traps and apparently we’re using different targets for the actual competition, which I didn’t know until yesterday, so just adjusting to that new flight and how the target moves”.
Rossi blinked on her opening shot, before a composed Rooney stepped up to nail the first attempt.
“I’ve never been in this situation before”.
“Shooting is an awesome sport”, she said.
Rooney told Stuff in April that her omission from the London squad was a blessing because she realised she “was not ready to throw away my lifelong dream of competing at the Olympics”.
“I feel I’m a much more consistent shooter now”, she said.
Cogdell-Unrein went to another shoot-off after tying Spain’s Fatima Galvez with 13 in the bronze medal match, but hit her first shot this time.
The pair had a shoot-off, with Rooney prevailing, hitting the target first-up while Cogdell missed.
She finished sixth out of six finalists.
Skinner’s gold medal triumph capped a remarkably courageous run for the Australian, who survived a tense shoot-off against Canada’s Cynthia Meyer earlier in the day just to reach the final six-person qualifier for the medal matches.
