Rio 2016: Hope Solo taunted with cries of ‘Zika’
United States’ goalkeeper Hope Solo, left, makes a save as France’s Maire Laure Delie looks on during a group G match of the women’s Olympic football tournament between United States and France at the Mineirao stadium in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016.

Entering the tournament as hot favorites after winning the Women’s World Cup past year, the Americans were rarely troubled in their Group G opener and cruised to victory thanks to goals from captain Carli Lloyd and star forward Alex Morgan.
“Hope Solo is solid when it comes to focusing on the games”. She brings light to the numerous issues that the female soccer league needs to address and when you take the time to notice, you, too, would agree that big changes are needed. “Zika!” simply because she expressed concern and joked about catching the virus before she landed in Rio.
Hope Solo overcame more merciless taunts from Brazilian soccer fans on Saturday, helping the US to its second consecutive win at these Olympics despite being consistently jeered with cries of “Zika“. “If they’re having fun, great. I mean, at least it’s loud in the stadium – I’d rather have that than hear a needle drop”.
Some Brazilians were upset by Solo prior to her arriving at the Rio Olympics. “Get your own! #zikaproof #RoadToRio”. Later, Solo admitted that fear about Zika had been highly exaggerated.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Zika is spread mostly by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus)”.
Zika is actually unsafe for women who want to get pregnant, could get pregnant, or already are pregnant.
It is important to know that the “zika children” are born with underdeveloped heads. It’s something to be aware of and I’m taking every precaution necessary. Men can also carry Zika and pass it to their partner through sex. In a unusual interview with the Associated Press on Monday, Solo blamed the media for spreading fear about the virus, saying it was “unfortunate” that they were being so tough but it’s par for the course with the Olympics.

The three-time Olympic medalist has been very vocal about the unmanageable Zika risks while playing in Rio. The crowd of almost 10,000 fans at the 60,000-capacity Mineirao Stadium jeered the goalkeeper with the reference to the virus. The U.S. women’s volleyball team endured a stretch of inconsistency before pulling it together and sweeping Puerto Rico 25-17, 25-22, 25-17 in the preliminary stage.
