Olympic viewing: NBC’s ratings drop, chaotic bike race
With so many different competitions and so little time to view everything, NBC is doing its best to put live events and highlights at your fingertips, no matter which device you’re using or where you’re at. There may be restrictions on viewing recordings or real-time channels from outside your home – though NBC’s app is available for that.

The Olympics run Friday through August 21 on NBC. And a special Olympics promotion starting August 1 will let viewers watch for free CNBC and MSNBC, channels typically part of a World News package, costing an additional $5 monthly.
Usually the Olympics are delayed because of extreme time zone differences.
With more than 6,700 hours of coverage planned for this year’s Rio Olympics – 1,200 more than what it produced for the London Games in 2012 – NBC’s coverage has grown into a marathon unto itself.
Olympics and Yahoo have extended an existing digital alliance that factors in content and promotion surrounding the Summer Olympics in Rio, including links to all of NBCOlympics.com’s exclusive live streamed events and video highlights to Yahoo’s USA audience. Some are lucky to watch them live straight from the stadium. Some TiVo models give you online access to your recordings.
The NBC broadcast network itself is part of the basic Sling Blue package, but is available only in the Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Hartford, Conn., Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Diego and Washington markets.
“You’ve got to talk about the condition of the water”. You will, of course, have to login with your cable credentials to access live events on the app.
Both PlayStation Vue and Sling TV have seven-day free trial offers, enough to get you through much of the Olympic preliminaries. One added bonus is that Vue keeps recordings for up to 28 days, but it’s not ubiquitous across all channels.
ESPN, including their flagship highlight show “SportsCenter”, can not air any highlights from the Rio Olympics until after NBC’s broadcast on the west coast ends. If you subscribe to a cable television package, this first section is for you.
If illness or other crises arise, does NBC bear some responsibility for what happens because of the large license fee it pays to the International Olympics Committee, the NBC team was asked. Can Michael Phelps live up to, or even surpass, his past glories in what is likely his Olympic swan song?
