Djokovic’s defeat came on a day where the Williams sisters, reigning champions, suffered their first ever defeat at the Games in 16 matches.

“That was first time of my life that I play in (such) bad conditions”.

The American duo was the No. 1 seed in Rio after their 14th Grand Slam championship at Wimbledon just over a month ago.

The Czechs, meanwhile, are unseeded. Strycova was a late replacement for Karolina Pliskova, who withdrew from the tournament.

Together, Venus, 36, and Serena, 34, have won 15 matches together across Olympic Games and Grand Slam tournaments.

“We tried yesterday in doubles and I gave my all today, no regrets”. You probably could see on the court she’s coughing quite a bit. The Pole only arrived in Rio on Wednesday night after having to fly from Montreal, where she competed last week, to NY to Lisbon and then to Rio.

“But it was a challenge”, Safarova continued, “and we love challenges”.

“Delpo was the better player and he deserved to win”.

For Venus, who won singles gold at Sydney 2000, there is still the possibility of a medal in doubles, as she and sister Serena take to the court on Monday in defence of the Olympic title they won together at London 2012, having also won gold in Sydney and Beijing.

The 36-year-old Venus was knocked out of the singles on Saturday with her USA team saying she was suffering from a virus.

“Unfortunately, Venus has been sick for a few days, is really ill right now”, Fernandez said following Venus’ loss to Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens according to Yahoo Sports.

In the doubles, played under the lights, when occasional chants of “USA!” would rise from some spectators, other members of the crowd would respond with boos. But Safarova and Strycova again pounced on Venus in her next service game, breaking to serve for the match.

“I just played point after point, keep focusing, keep believing”. “I wasn’t crossing the way I need to cross”.

“Lucie was playing unbelievable from the baseline”, Strycova said. “She was hitting wonderful winners, returns”.
