Jim Furyk shoots first 58 in PGA Tour history at Travelers Championship
In his case, Furyk’s 59 had come in the second round of the BMW Championship at Conway Farm, outside Chicago. The 31-year-old Scot won for the second time on the tour, following his breakthrough victory in China in November in the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions.

“(It is) pretty humbling, to think of all the great players, great names, to be the very lowest and the only person right now (to shoot 58) is pretty special”, he told Golf Channel.
“I felt like the Incredible Hulk when it went in”, Knox said. “And to do it in one season is pretty fantastic”. “I go over it three or four times, and then I usually peak my head out and ask them again if it’s signed and they’ve already checked it three times so I did the same thing”.
Kelly, the 49-year-old former University of Hartford player, finished with a 64. He could earn a wildcard selection there.
“The Tour Championship was my main goal starting the year”.
Knox trailed Dan Berger by three shots heading into the final round. His only pars were at 1, 5, 13, 14, 15, 17 and 18. Back in 2010, Ryo Ishikawa shot a 58 – 12 birdies and no bogeys – to win The Crowns tournament on the Japan Tour while only last week Germany’s Stefan Jager shot a 58 on his way to winning the Ellie Mae Classic on the Web.Com Tour, the secondary circuit in the United States.
Al Geiberger, Chip Beck, David Duval, Paul Goydos and Stuart Appleby are the other players to have shot sub-60 on the PGA Tour. “It was a different golf course this afternoon than it was this morning”. He drove into the rough, hit into the right greenside bunker and exploded out. He added birdies at the 10th, 11th and 12th. “I made a pathetic swing”. It’s one of those holes if you hit the fairway it’s a very easy par and if you miss the fairway it’s an extremely hard par.
Russell Knox has saved par with a 12-foot putt on the final hole to beat hometown favourite Jerry Kelly by a stroke in the Travelers Championship, hours after Jim Furyk shot the first 58 in PGA Tour history.
Furyk began the day 16 shots off the lead in 70th place at 1 over.
A low-key, humble Furyk was asked about his thoughts on how he did it, “I had the pedal down in the front nine”, Jim said, “Once I hit it, what was it, about a foot on number nine and tapped it in for eight under par, then I said, alright, you know you start running the numbers; Three under on the back shoots 59, you got a lot of short irons on the back nine”. One more birdie on 16 put Furyk in position for the 58.
“I’m still a little stunned and a little flabbergasted”, Furyk said.
Furyk finished in a tie for fifth at 11 under. He finished with a 74 to tie with Furyk, Robert Garrigus and Tyrone Van Aswegen at 11 under.
While Furyk is missing out on the Olympic Games, he’ll still feel golden after today. He shot a 62 of his own and got smoked by Furyk.
The 46-year-old American achieved the feat at the Travelers Championship in CT, holing 10 birdies and an eagle to shoot 12 under. “They always have but that’s probably the best I’ve played for them”.
