At 42 years, 290 days, Ichiro is the second-oldest player to reach 3,000 hits.Christian Yelich and Jeff Mathis each had three hits and three RBIs for the Marlins.

Making his first start since July 29, Suzuki struck out on his first at-bat and grounded out on the next two.

Ichiro looked done after last season, when he hit just.229.

And he had 262 of those 3,000 hits in the 2004 season – an Major League Baseball single-season record. “It’s about my team mates and the fans, and that’s how I felt today”. You saw how the fans reacted.

“To be honest with you, I did not feel comfortable”, he told Stone in 2011.

But Ichiro got there despite coming to the U.S.at 27 years old – by which time most players are past their peak.

The historic hit almost was a home run, but bounced off the top of the wall and eluded Colorado outfielder Gerardo Parra.

“I’m disappointed with giving up a triple”, Rusin said. He’s a flawed individual like the rest of us, and his legacy is obviously complicated, brought on by his own mistakes. The simplicity and clarity of his objective has made him one of the most joyful players to watch in the game’s long history.

The Giants played a close game on Sunday, allowing only two hits but somehow managing to lose 1-0 to the Washington Nationals.

He beat out an infield single for hit 2,999 on Saturday against the Rockies.

“Obviously, I wanted to see it go over the fence, ” Ichiro said. “Maybe I’d have more, but maybe I’d have less”, the story quoted him as saying.

Suzuki slapped a seventh-inning triple off the right field wall for his milestone, then scored one of Miami’s 10 runs on the day as the Marlins fended off Colorado’s repeated attempts at a comeback to record a 10-7 win.

The Japanese star launched a long drive to right field that carried just beyond the reach of leaping Gerardo Parra.

– Ichiro is the fourth 3,000 Hit Club member who was born outside the United States, joining Rod Carew (Panama), Roberto Clemente (Puerto Rico) and Rafael Palmeiro (Cuba).

Ichiro had 1,278 hits for the Orix BlueWave in Japan’s Nippon Pro Baseball, where he began his career before moving to Seattle. Rose is MLB’s all-time hits leader with with 4,256. Next up is Al Kaline at 3,007 and Wade Boggs at 3,010. After playing seven seasons in his native Japan, Ichiro made an immediate impact in Seattle winning the AL Rookie of the Year and AL MVP in 2001 for a Mariners team that tied a Major League Baseball record with 116 wins. “He has been the most popular sports figure in Japan for about 20 years – back to when he was playing there”.

Suzuki was hitless in his first three at-bats of the game before the big hit against Chris Rusin. “I love this game and I love this team”, he said, often choking up.
