Serena Williams beats Flavia Pennetta in Toronto

Sabine Lisicki secured her place in the second round of the Rogers Cup with a comprehensive victory over Venus Williams.

“Against Venus you have to play well to be able to beat her”, Lisicki said.

Williams later saved two match factors however couldn’t battle off a 3rd as Lisicki improved her report to Four-1 towards the American. “My opponent and I were under the same conditions, and she played really well”.

During the match, some fans cheered on Lisicki but many tried to encourage Williams as she struggled.

Lisicki looked at the draw and knew she had to be prepared from the start of the tournament. We knew we were doing the right stuff on the court, and that it was just a matter of time to get it all working again, and I’m happy that I did that today.

Williams, trailing 3-0, had a chance to break back but could not convert as Lisicki held to forge further ahead.

“It’s hard to just, first round, play a player who doesn’t give you any rhythm”, Williams said.

This was Williams’ second match since she lost to her sister Serena during the fourth round at Wimbledon, and she was noticeably shaky.

Only one other singles match was completed Monday, as Italy’s Flavia Pennetta defeated Ottawa’s Gabriel Dabrowski 6-4, 6-1 on center court.

Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., was set to face Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic in her first-round match on centre court at 7 p.m.
