Mourinho: Man Utd doing everything to sign Pogba before Premier League starts

“What is happening is what is happening in every club in the world, which is the manager decides the squad and chooses a certain number of players to face the season and that is it”, Mourinho said.

Mourinho has already completed deals for centre-back Eric Bailly, midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer and said last month that 75% of the club’s transfer business is done.

He added: “I think especially for the players that were involved in last season, it must have a meaning”.

“We will only know if this is a fair price in few years from now”.

“I think he’s worth it”. We made decisions, we chose to bring in four players, not 10. We made decisions. We chose to bring four players, not 10, that are Man United level and that we think can really improve the squad and not just be one more.

“We got a super striker [in Zlatan] and we are going to get a very good midfield player, so I am happy with the balance of my squad, I’m happy with the effort that the club has, and is still putting in for us”.

Mourinho said he meant to use Sunday’s game between his FA Cup holders and Premier League champions Leicester – the traditional curtain-raiser to the English season – to give a run out to as many members of his squad as possible.

He told reporters: “You say my teams are different to Mr Van Gaal’s and that is correct – I’m not saying better – yes my teams are different”.

“It’s a hard situation to change the dynamic”, Mourinho said. “It would be easy for me to have 20 new players and to start from zero”, he said. For two years, they had some principles of play that are not my principles of play, clearly are not.

“Of course, after two years of work, there are things with their brain that are automatic, that is hard to change. but step by step, my team is going to be my team”.

“We can make six substitutions instead of three, so that gives me the chance to give minutes to people”, he said.
