AMD Launches Radeon RX 470 For Mainstream Gamers
Stunning HDR Pixels – Featuring a brand new display engine, the Radeon™ RX 460 graphics card is ready to help power the new generation of HDR content and displays for video and gaming. The AMD GPU is a rival to Nvidia’s popular GTX 750 Ti. Historically the reason for this reaction was pretty straightforward: the GPUs within the $200 to $300 are typically the ones which provide the most bang for your buck.

The sub-$200 segment has always been an interesting one for graphics cards and I use the term interesting loosely.
The RX460 and RX470 were announced at the PC Gaming Show at E3 in June, and are budget alternatives for the serious but less loaded gamer who still needs the best they can get from their machine. Nonetheless, it is here where vendors achieve their volume shipments. Regardless of whether you choose 4GB or 8GB, the MSI Gaming RX 470s will boost to up to 1230 MHz. In fact, they quickly assumed that the graphics card might end up being Vega 10. R7 370 driver used: 16.15.2211.
Aside from the GPU, these cards are identical to their bigger brother, the Nitro+ RX 480. Over the last three years the vast majority of AMDs solutions within the $99 to $199 range have been rebrands.
Also, the Radeon RX 470 features improved Dual-X cooling with two 95 mm dual-ball bearing fans that have an 85% longer lifespan compared to fans with sleeve bearings. As such, a drastic change was needed. Its predecessor had frequencies of 1120MHz and 1266MHz, so we can see clearly the RX 470 has lower frequencies.
AMD just released their new graphics processing unit, the RX 470 which is said to be RX 480’s little sibling. In the RX 470s case that means modules running at 6.6Gbps across a 256-bit wide bus. While the Polaris architectures 14nm FinFET manufacturing process has obviously allowed for vast improvements in efficiency, AMD is still facing an uphill battle on the TDP front. Asus also limits their card to a six-pin power connector, while at least one company, MSI, shipped an eight-pin version. Was AMD purposely trying to make RX 480 look bad with this lanuch?
Sapphire did not reveal pricing or availability for these cards, but it isn’t unreasonable to expect a (small) premium over the $179 price point that AMD recommended for basic RX 470 models.
“Being an X model it has been fitted with the awesome TwinFrozr VI cooler that once again proves its effectiveness as this is the most silent RX 470 we have tested to date”. The RX 470 scored: 64.81 fps, 64.20 fps, and 90.16 fps respectively. That performance enables AMD to push the RX 460 as a low-priced option for e-sports games. Right now only the 4GB Gaming X card is listed on the ‘Egg, at 9. Meanwhile, the non-OC-version runs at the reference 1206 MHz in Gaming mode, or 1226 MHz in OC mode.

So what does that extra $20 pay for?
