Phillies complete first-ever triple play at Petco Park

The first was when pinch hitter and perennial former Chicago White Sox Alexei Ramirez secured his 36th RBI via a solo home run to left off of Hellickson with two outs in the seventh. San Diego managed to tie the game up in the sixth against Eickhoff, who went six innings, giving up five runs (one was unearned) off five hits for his seventh win of the year.

Rookie shortstop Jose Rondon’s throwing error on Cesar Hernandez’s grounder leading off the seventh against Brad Hand (3-3) allowed the Phillies’ hitter to reach second base safely.

Detroit’s Matt Boyd (3-2) allowed three runs and six hits in five innings, and New York’s Logan Verrett (3-7) yielded six runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.

With the help of that triple-play and Jeanmar Gomez’s 29th save of the season, the Phillies take the series against the San Diego Padres, and will head to Los Angeles to face Chase Utley and the Dodgers. Hernandez’s relay to first beat Blash by a step.

“I’m someone that wants to bring that tying run in or potentially put us ahead”, Blash said. “It wasn’t the ideal situation”.

The last triple-play turned by the Phillies was the rare unassisted triple play by Eric Bruntlett against the Mets in 2009. triple play ended the game for the Phillies after he caught a Jeff Francouer line drive, stepped on second, and tagged Daniel Murphy in-between the base pads. “I was calmed down. I tried to settle in a little”.

“Before he went up, he put more pine tar on his bat than a lot of guys use in a year, ” Padres manager Andy Green said.

“I thought he was better today”, he said. “Especially in the first inning I wasn’t able to spin the ball for strikes or get fastballs down in the zone”. “He gave us a chance”.

The next inning was better for the Padres offense, as Jankowski and Myers led off with back to back doubles.

Philadelphia sent nine batters to the plate in the fourth to seize a 5-1 edge as Jarred Cosart got knocked around. Two more came in the fourth inning. Norris eventually scored on Travis Jankowski’s groundout.

Stripling got Ortiz to ground out with two men on in the first inning, and then got him to fly out to end the third. That snapped a string of 13 consecutive innings that the Phillies had failed to score with Eickhoff pitching. Eflin has won but once in his last four starts, which includes two no-decisions. Sunday’s win gave the Phillies an all-time record of 32-11 at Petco, the 74.4 percent winning percentage being the highest by any visiting team since the Padres’ downtown home opened in 2004.
