Indians acquire reliever Andrew Miller from Yankees to fortify bullpen

The deal came less than 12 hours after the Indians had reached agreement on the parameters of a swap with Milwaukee for Brewers All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy.

“There were some circumstances that came up that made me void it, obviously”, Lucroy said in Milwaukee. “I was shocked. It was 8 o’clock in the morning, but t I think ultimately when everything settled in I knew I was coming to a good place”. I’m going to be the same way here.

Miller is now a member of the Indians, but Lucroy headed to the Texas Rangers after vetoing a trade to the Indians.

But Lucroy, who was in the final year of his contract with Milwaukee holding a contract option for 2017, chose to stay with the team that drafted him in 2007, according to the person familiar with the situation. The Indians have been looking for a catcher – and a right-handed hitter – since Yan Gomes separated his shoulder earlier this month.

First, there was the blockbuster sending closer Andrew Miller to the Indians for high-end prospects. “It breathes a lot of life into this clubhouse.

“We lost a true leader and good friend for me”, Betances said.

Feyereisen also has a high upside, as he has totaled a 4-3 record, five saves, 2.23 ERA, and 56 strikeouts in 40.1 innings.

It wasn’t cheap as the Indians are sending top prospect Clint Frazier, second ranked pitching prospect Justus Sheffield (initially supposed to be heading to the Brewers in the vetoed Jonathan Lucroy trade), and two relievers with high expectations, Ben Heller and J.P. Feyereisen, to NY in exchange for the 31-year old Miller, who is signed through 2018 for $9 million per season. But for me now, I get a chance to go to a team that’s in the thick of it and has big plans for this year.

“Nothing really changed. I’ve just to get better and keep focusing on the little things that’ll make me better”. “It is why we engage with multiple teams throughout the entirety of the negotiation”. Miller has more than $21 million left on his contract, which runs through 2018, and sources have told ESPN’s Jayson Stark that the Indians are on the Hook for all of it.

“Wherever Tito asks me to pitch, I’ll pitch”, he said.

While the familiar faces were nice to see, it might’ve been unfamiliar face that was the most important for Miller to seek. It’s great that they feel that way.

Arizona traded reliever Tyler Clippard to the Yankees in exchange for minor-leaguer Vicente Campos.

The only left-handed pitcher on the active roster besides Miller is Kyle Crockett, and he is more of a mid-game reliever than a lefty specialist who can be called upon in late-game, pressure situations.

This year’s trade deadline had a weird vibe.

Miley went 11-11 with a 4.46 ERA in 32 starts with Boston a year ago and was traded to Seattle in December. He pitched seven innings of one-hit ball in Seattle’s 4-1 against the major league-leading Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

NY does not have many strong areas this year, but their relief arms were one of them.

Sheffield, 20, was selected by Cleveland in the first round (31st overall) of the 2014 draft.

CARDS GET RELIEF: St. Louis added depth to its bullpen by acquiring veteran LHP Zach Duke from the White Sox for minor-league OF Charlie Tilson.

Clippard was drafted by the Yankees in 2003, made six starts as a rookie in 2007 and then was traded to Washington.

Miller, 31, was expected to arrive in Cleveland on Sunday night and will join the team tonight for the series opener against Minnesota. He has a.293 career minor league average in 471 games.
