Katie Ledecky’s first Rio win leaves teammates, crowd in awe

“I was just trying to set a (personal) best time, and for me that just happens to be a world record”.

The Rio Olympics have been exciting so far, and today should be no different.

That leaves the 200m freestyle in what will probably come down to a duel with Italian world record holder Federica Pellegrini and Sweden’s butterfly gold medallist Sarah Sjostrom. Clocking 47.12, Phelps jumped the USA from second to first, past France, and the team would not look back. “She is fantastic and I knew she was going to get that time tonight”.

Katie Ledecky’s 4.77-second win is over a second more than the margin of victory in Women’s 400m Free at the previous 6 Olympics COMBINED.

Getting to Rio is an achievement in itself for the Venezuelans, who are now ranked 22 in the world and qualified by making the final of the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship.

On Sunday, she covered the last 50m in a blazing 28.92sec, leaving Jazz Carlin of Great Britain to collect silver in 4:01.23 – 4.77 seconds adrift. It was stunning. Ledecky, the rock of the US women’s swimming team, is typically understated: a kind, thoughtful, intelligent, unaffected swimming machine.

Sir Philip Craven, president of the International Paralympic Committee, announces Sunday that the entire Russian Paralympic team will be barred from next month’s games in Rio de Janeiro.

The rowing competition resumed in calm and overcast conditions after races were canceled Sunday due to strong winds. The match will be shown live on NBCSN and streamed on NBCOlympics.com at 11:00 a.m. ET in the United States. Ten of the 12 players on this year’s US roster are first-time Olympians and that probably won’t matter. Though she paced the qualifying by more than four seconds, a “lackadaisical” – her word – final stroke may have cost her the record.

Efimova, who has served two doping suspensions, succeeded in an appeal last week against being banned from Rio.

Ledecky has her toughest race Monday afternoon when she competes in the 200-meter freestyle. He blazed down and back in a stunning 47.12 seconds, a time that was faster than all but the three anchors on the medal-winning teams, three of the best in the world at that distance.

Michael Phelps is not content with a record 19th gold medal – he’s aiming for more. After 200 meters, it was by 2.87 seconds.

Of Ledecky’s three world records (in the 400, 800 and 1,500, which is not an Olympic event for women), the one in the 400 had stood the longest. As mentioned earlier, she has been into swimming, since childhood, and while in high school, she set a couple of records.

Durant scored eight points in the first quarter and Carmelo Anthony added eight as the US jumped out to a 30-10 lead after the first quarter, capped by Jimmy Butler’s fast break reverse layin at the buzzer.

While Japan has been a favorite, the team looked shaky in preliminaries. The showdown between the powerhouse nations will take place at Youth Arena in Rio de Janeiro.
