Delta struggles to take flight after global system outage

A rival US airline, United, suffered computer glitches in May and July 2015 that temporarily grounded hundreds of flights and backed up thousands of passengers. After their computers crashed at its Atlanta headquarters, passengers were forced to sleep on the floors of airports all over and customers are NOT happy!

-August 15 – A technical failure at a flight control center in Virginia prompted widespread flight delays and cancellations throughout the northeastern U.S.

“1 hr.+ lines @HeathrowAirport for @Delta due to system outage”, tweeted user @MITJAKE with a picture of passengers waiting to check in.

“Now we are kind of seeing the ripple effect, It’s not a really long line, and it looks like there are quite a few passengers who are getting checked in and getting their connection”, she said.

Delta advised customers to check the status of their flights while it tried to fix the problem.

Delta Airlines grounded all departing flights for part of Monday morning after a computer outage. That agreement ended in the last 18 months.

The airline is urging customers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.

Delta has issued a waiver for all passengers traveling between Aug.8 -12. Just before 8 a.m., however, Delta is lifting the ground stop on some flights across the country.

Earlier Monday, Delta said “large-scale cancellations are expected”.

“Flights enroute are operating normally”.

Delta has issued a waiver for anyone traveling from August 8-12. Delta shares tanked 7.8% after the financial update on Tuesday, leaving them down more than 25% so far this year.

The Atlanta-based carrier said in a statement that the outage began around 2:30 a.m.

Confirmation of the troubles first came in an official account that responds to customers via Twitter.

The best way to find out if your flight is affected is to check the Delta app on your phone or go to Delta’s website, Messier said.

DTW is a major hub for Delta Airlines, with 455 peak-day departures and 127 destinations served.
