“He’s a good hitter”, Collins said. “That’s what he can do. We need that right now”.

The drive prompted smiles inside the Mets dugout and chants of “Bruce, Bruce” from the many Met fans in the crowd. Kelly Johnson led off the inning with a solo homer, his fifth of the year and fourth with the Mets. “It’s a good time for his first one”. Bruce went 0 for 8 in his first two games, including a key strikeout with the bases loaded in the seventh inning last night.

“I think it’s big for everybody”, Collins said.

Despite the fact that he had missed three straight starts, Cespedes was able to get in a round of golf with former major leaguer Kevin Millar on Wednesday afternoon. The atmosphere in that clubhouse the other day when we got Jay Bruce should’ve been that our ownership and our front office don’t think we’re dead or they wouldn’t have gone out and done what they did.

Jay Bruce’s first hit as a New York Met? The worst thing I can do is try to be something else, ” Bruce said.

Steven Matz (8-8) allowed six runs in the first two innings and is 1-5 since July 1.

“He just had a flare-up of a little bit of back pain, and the doctor said just back him off”, general manager Sandy Alderson said. “He was just being Bart”. Jerry Blevins surrendered an RBI single to Aaron Hicks which allowed the run to score.

Bruce got the Mets’ only hit with runners in scoring position in four opportunities.

When discussing his surprise in not facing Rodriguez, who was benched in favor youngster Gary Sanchez on Thursday, Colon had this hilarious information to share.

“I didn’t see myself being a starter at this point”, Colon said through an interpreter. I always say, ‘that’s my dad’.

Mets slugger Yoenis Cespedes is going on the 15-day disabled list because of his strained right quadriceps. While Collins continues to defend his outfielder, he’s clearly getting agitated having to answer questions about the subject. “But it’s still the same guy”, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Coincidentally, Thursday marked the ninth anniversary of his 500th home run and the sixth anniversary of No. 600.

YANKEES: Luis Severino is rejoining the New York Yankees’ rotation. The Yankees also optioned RHP Chad Green to Scranton/Wilkes Barre and recalled RHP Johnny Barbato from the Triple-A club. If the same photo hit the internet while Cespedes was playing well and the Mets were winning, it’d either be ignored entirely or celebrated as an indication of how he’s keeping loose and having fun.
