Eighty-four-year-old Jole and 94-year-old Michele told police that no one had visited them in months and they were desperately saddened by the state of the world.

Sharing pictures of the couple, who have been married for almost 70 years, on Facebook, the police wrote: ‘Jole and Michele are not victims of scams as often happens to the elderly and no burglar came in the house.

Their team posted the incident on the force’s Facebook post, where it has been shared more than 23,000 times and liked, loved or cried over using the site’s emojis more than 64,000 times. They asked if they might look inside the kitchen pantry and they offered to cook the couple a simple meal of pasta, butter and cheese. The post is written in Italian. It describes Jole and Michele alone at home with the TV as company.

There was on special ingredient, though, police say: humanity. They were also crying because of the ghastly headlines in the news recently. “It comes suddenly and overtakes one”, the post read. “They understand that just a little human warmth will restore tranquility to Jole and Michele”. Heartbreakingly, they’d been suffering from an “incurable loneliness”, per La Repubblica.

Police say they asked for permission to look in their pantry, and made a decision to put together a meal for them.
