Man who allegedly assaulted Dylann Roof released on $100000 bond
Roof is not pressing charges. Records don’t show who put up the $100,000 bond, but after the bathroom incident, Stafford supporters launched a fundraiser page to donate to his commissary.

He ran down the steps from his cell Thursday morning and attacked Roof, 21, who was in the shower, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said in a report.
According to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, shortly before 8 a.m. on Thursday 22-year-old Dylann Roof was in the process of preparing for a shower in Housing Unit 1B, when he was physically assaulted by Stafford.
While in jail, Stafford allegedly assaulted fellow inmate Dylann Roof, who is now on trial for the murder of nine people who were fatally shot while attending church at Mother Emanuel AME in June of a year ago.
Stafford had been in jail since January 2015 on charges of first-degree assault and strong armed robbery charges. The jail is doing an internal investigation. Roof, who reportedly prayed with his victims for an hour before opening fire, penned a lengthy, hate-filled manifesto professing his hatred of black people. “The injuries that Roof received are relatively minor – some bruising around the face and the back”.
According to Cannon, Roof is always escorted by detention officers, but that an officer was dropping off toilet paper when the assault happened and a second officer was taking a break, something he says is not common procedure during the time an inmate would be taking a shower. Investigators are trying to determine how an electronic lock on Stafford’s cell door failed to keep it locked, he said.
Defense attorneys have said in both state and federal courts that Roof is willing to plead guilty and serve a life term in prison if prosecutors don’t seek the death penalty.

It is unlikely that Roof will go free at the end of his trial; if he is allowed to live, however, he will have to live knowing he tried to start a race war and that there are people out there, like Stafford, who are willing to call his bluff.
