Teen Shooter Virginia Thrasher Wins USA’s First Gold Medal of Rio Olympics

With a loud bang, Thrasher scored 208.0 in the 10-meter air rifle competition, Saturday August 6, 2016, earning her a gold medal on the spot.

In the air rifle competition, shooters use pellets with a flat fronts that leave clean holes in the paper target that determines scoring.

Thrasher says she wanted to be an Olympic figure skater when she was younger, but became enamored with shooting while joining her grandfather, father, and two older brothers on a hunting trip.
