Labour leadership candidates battle for future of UK’s opposition party
Mr Smith said: “We’ve got food and water and all that”.

“No-one and no community will ever be left behind by Labour”, he said.
Paternal activist group Fathers 4 Justice has occupied the roof of Jeremy Corbyn’s London home because the Labour Party leader is yet to meet with them. “The party could be split”, he said.
He told Sky News: “We shouldn’t be going into a leadership election saying: ‘Vote for me or some of my supporters will split the party.’ People don’t want to be blackmailed in that way”.
The leadership contest has been soured by reports of bullying and intimidation with the Wallasey Labour Party suspended pending an investigation.
When asked how he felt when he saw large numbers attending Corbyn rallies on TV, Mr Smith said: “Jeremy is drawing crowds of 5,000”.
“The family of the Labour Party that helped to put them into Parliament in order to represent Labour views and Labour values”.
The latest opinion polls make uncomfortable reading, with one by ICM putting the Conservatives 16 points ahead, while a YouGov survey found 29 percent of Labour voters would prefer May to Corbyn as prime minister.
But Mr Corbyn hit back, blaming Mr Smith and others for undermining party unity when they quit the shadow cabinet in protest at his leadership.
“I hope that other trade unionists will join us in supporting Owen’s leadership campaign. I will unite this party around it and I will take this party back to government”. “I don’t think our leadership has been strong enough about stamping it out”, Smith said.
Challenged on why he resigned as shadow secretary of state for work and pensions, he said: “Because I don’t think you’re going to be able to deliver it”.
He has also dismissed the idea Labour could split if he is re-elected leader.
He won the leadership with nearly 60 percent of votes less than a year ago and was backed by 54 percent of party supporters, compared to 22 percent for Smith, in an Opinium poll published on July 23.
“The assembly election results, we gained some seats as well as losing one”, he said. It just shows how desperate his campaign has become and the lengths to which he’s prepared to descend to that he’s now trying scare Labour members into voting for him.
“Corbyn’s five commitments are a win for our Party – we said we would push women’s equality higher up the political agenda by threatening the votes of mainstream parties, and in this we have succeeded. We could all be living richer lives in a sustainable, more prosperous and more caring society”. “We are a fractured, splintered party and the only people who will benefit from that are the Tories”.
But Mr Smith retorted: “I think we have got to do more than that”.
