While local transmissions have not occurred in Brevard County, local transmissions are possible if a Zika infected visitor or returning traveler is bitten by mosquitoes that then spread the virus to other people they bite. Hundreds of Floridians have been infected after traveling to areas affected by Zika, but this was the first time the virus had been transmitted through carrier mosquitoes on USA soil.

Alameda County health officials said ten residents have contracted the Zika virus by traveling to areas where the disease is being transmitted by mosquitoes.
Health officials encourage women who are pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant to delay or cancel travel to an area where mosquitoes are transmitting the virus. “Like it or not, it’s here in Jacksonville right now”.

Where did Zika come from?
The Zika virus outbreak in Puerto Rico is expanding rapidly. With a growing number of US travelers returning from overseas with the Zika virus and with several cases of Zika-related microcephaly and birth defects reported in the USA, the disease has inflamed the abortion debate domestically.
