Donald Trump has endorsed US House Speaker Paul Ryan, ending a four-day stand-off which exposed deeps chasms in the Republican party over the billionaire’s presidential candidacy.
On Thursday, Ryan again condemned Trump’s remarks about the Khans as “beyond the pale” and acknowledged that at some point, Trump could go too far for Ryan to be able to continue to support him.
Trump sought to heal party divisions by endorsing House Speaker Paul Ryan after refusing to announce his support earlier in the week.
“I need a Republican Senate and House to accomplish all of the changes that we have to make”.
Neither Ryan nor Wisconsin’s Republican governor, Scott Walker, showed up for Trump’s Green Bay event.
Earlier this week, Trump told the Washington Post, “I don’t know Kelly Ayotte”.
“I like Paul. I like Paul”. But these are terrible times for our country. “Very important, we’ll work together”.
McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, has also criticized the Trump campaign. And I’m just not quite there.
“I hold in the highest esteem, Senator John McCain”, said Trump. At the time, Ryan had said, “I’m not there right now”, in an interview on CNN. He is one of only a handful of hedge fund managers to have publicly endorsed Trump. “I look presidential”, he said to supporters at a rally in Windham, N.H.
Trump also thumbed his nose at Ayotte, citing her lack of direct support.
Last summer in Iowa, Trump touched off controversy by questioning whether McCain was a war hero. “John McCain for his service to our country in uniform and in public office, and I fully support and endorse his re-election”, the real estate mogul said Friday. In the same interview, Trump said he was not supporting McCain of Arizona and Ayotte of New Hampshire.
