United States goalkeeper Hope Solo gets bombarded with angry chants at Olympics
On Wednesday, fans at the 60,000-capacity Mineirao Stadium booed Solo almost every time she touched the ball.

The crowd at the 60,000-capacity Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte was also heard repeatedly chanting “Zika, Zika” nearly every time she touched the ball.
Following the team’s win, Solo told a reporter that she did hear the boos from the field, but that she was happy the crowd enjoyed themselves, even if it was at her expense. She took heat – from her teammates and others – for criticizing her coach’s decision to bench her in favour of Brianna Scurry for the 2007 World Cup semifinals, which the USA lost.
“Zika!” during her team’s game against New Zealand to open up their Olympic play. Earlier this week, she posted a photograph of herself on Twitter wearing a beekeeper’s mask and holding a giant bottle of insect repellent.
The U.S. men and women’s basketball teams arrived in Rio, spent some time on their luxury cruise ship that will house them for the next 20 days and then the ladies went to work.
“That was the best way we could have started”, said Tobin Heath, who made the cross that led to Lloyd’s goal. The locals find the worldwide media outcry over the Zika virus sensationalistic, and blame Solo for helping to fuel the hype. Solo ultimately didn’t follow through on that threat, but she did make a rather public show of her concerns. “I think in that regards we put our best foot forward and got that goal and I think that helped propel us throughout the game”.
Virginia Thrasher, a 19-year-old who once had her heart set on figure skating, captured the 10-meter air rifle Saturday. Almost 10,000 fans at the stadium chanted “Zika, Zika” at her. After arriving in Brazil, she blamed the us media for being “really tough” on the people of Brazil, then tried to praise them as nice, genuine and warm people.
Solo’s career began with a comfortable blowout, but she’s made countless spectacular saves over the years to earn a USA goalkeeper record 151 wins against increasingly competitive worldwide competition. Many athletes chose to opt out of coming to Rio to compete in the Olympic games, including golfer Rory Mcilroy and tennis champion Simona Halep, for obvious, understandable reasons.
“I was pretty focused on the game”.
