Tech Tips: Are you better off keeping Verizon contract plan?

Despite the introduction of new customer plans, Verizon said that existing customers can still keep their current plans or they can also opt in and apply for the new ones. New customers can sign up by buying a new smartphone and current customers can stay on their existing plan or move to the new one, with some restrictions. According to Times Gazette, under the new scheme, there will be no family or single-line plan.

Since Verizon is the largest wireless carrier, it puts Apple in a sticky situation this year – it probably won’t be able to say you can get the iPhone for $199 and up. Big difference. Nothing is free, however, and that remaining $450 has been made up for by contracting that individual to maintain service for two years and by hiding some of the $450 subsidy in the monthly rate plan. Sprint now lets customers lease its phones for a monthly charge, rather than buying. On the new plan every smartphone line is USD 20 per month, tablet and Jetpack lines are USD 10, and connected devices such as smart watches USD 5. The fourth option is the x-large plan, which will offer 12GB of data at $80 per month.

Verizon is getting rid of contracts for anyone who’s a new customer or buying a new phone-instead of a contract, you’ll just choose the amount of data you want, and you’ll either pay for the phone all at once or in installments. Each size comes with unlimited talk and text, with extra data costing $15 per GB. Since there is no longer a phone subsidy to make up for, your $40 line now costs $20 per month, or $480 over two years.

Bigwig US wireless carrier Verizon has revealed in a recent announcement that it is eliminating two-year service contracts and cellphone subsidies; and will soon start offering new price plans. In that case, your two-year service contract gets replaced by a two-year phone installment plan. Both AT&T and Verizon have attempted to follow suit by introducing versions of their own, and Verizon is finally moving completely in that direction. “Customers said they don’t want to have to do a lot of math to figure out their best options, and we heard them”, Rob Miller, vice-president of consumer pricing for Verizon Wireless, said in the release. If you’ve been using 6 GB a month in data, you could save $30 a month. Verizon will continue offering phones on monthly installments, which can be paid over a period of two years. “Four Sizes.” But they may also refer to as “The Verizon Plan”. Shoppers in the market for pricier Samsung Galaxy smartphones, for example, may be lured in by lower cost Android phones from other companies. You see, the company is being so aggressive these days perhaps as a response to T-Mobile’s #NeverSettle campaign which already ended but definitely had an effect on Verizon sales. Many rivals will pay any penalties anyway if you have to break your contract to switch.
