Xbox One S teardown: What did you expect?
The Xbox One 2 TB Launch Edition is retailing for $399 and is a limited edition. But should gamers ditch their current unit and head out to purchase the new console now? That’s reserved for the also newly-announced Project Scorpio – Microsoft’s next proper console that will launch in holiday 2017 next year. We have you covered.

The Xbox One S SoC has been overhauled and is now built on a 16nm FinFET process at TSMC. The system can now output 4K video from Netflix and 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. Some perfromance uplift /enhancement was also observed in Xbox 360 compatibility game play. The Master Chief logo inside the Xbox One can be found just above the fan on the bottom of the black panel labelled “DISC”.
It certainly seems like demand is sky-high for the shiny new version of the system.
“The new SoC consumes less power than the original Xbox One across all modes, and we’ve made improvements in both the hardware and software to hit our goals”. However, the monitor or TV connected to the “S” will have to support 4k and HDR in order to take advantage of the upgrades. It’s what I find most tempting about the idea of swapping one of my Xbox Ones out for the newer model. And is hard to configure and when you do end up figuring it out, there’s not much of a massive improvement.
This isn’t the case for every game though as the Xbox One S CPU is still clocked at 1.75GHz, meaning certain titles won’t see much additional benefit. So we really had to design to the best of our abilities what we thought was gonna be a super reliable and consistent performing console. The best scenario was that the Xbox One S offered nine more frames between the upgraded console and the other older ones, VG247 has learned.

Still, the console uses numerous same methods for design used since the Xbox 360, according to iFixit, and perhaps most importantly, is running the same AMD Jaguar 8-core system-on-a-chip CPU. The 1TB model costs $349, while the 500GB is the cheapest of the bunch, priced at $299. That said, Xbox One S is taller than PS4, but is shallower in depth and pretty much the same size in width. Microsoft has set a new benchmark for console entertainment which is on par with modern day advancements. Either way, you don’t need to get either right away unless you want to play Xbox One exclusives. There are also no issues reported when used with Dead Rising 3 or Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.
