Quake Champions Could be Free-to-Play?
Bethesda and iD Software are now working on a return to the Quake series. That may not necessarily be the case, but Quake’s foundation is built more on skill with characters that function in the exact same way, so there’s only so many ways to play the game. According to him, the developer hasn’t yet made up its mind. At the same time, however, a F2P arena shooter would be infinitely more accessible than a buy-to-play game, and id Software would likely make quite a bit of cash with microtransactions-even if they were just cosmetics.

Ever since id Software announced a new game in the Quake franchise at E3, people have been wondering what form it will take. Evidently, he doesn’t actually know.
“So for us, we’re trying to figure out exactly what people want more of, and how they perceive it”, Willits explained. “It’s not like we know and just aren’t trying to tell anybody, we don’t know and we’re still trying to figure this out”.
Quake Champions might not have come out looking as shiny as some of the other AAA titles that were unveiled at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, but the fact that Quake series is making a comeback with a brand new title after nearly a decade is itself enough to fill all the fans with excitement.

Tim Willits of id spoke on the issue at QuakeCon over the weekend.
