11-year-old girl shot in Hendersonville dies

An 11-year-old girl has died from her injuries after being shot in Hendersonville, Tennessee and the suspect is still at large.

Detective Sgt. Jim Vaughn told The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/2aHuTEX ) the child’s father said she told him when she arrived from school that she had been shot. When she went inside, she told her father she had been shot.

Police said the girl had died from her injuries at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after being airlifted in a briefing just before 5:30 p.m.

“Our entire school district is grieved to learn of the tragic loss of one of our sixth grade students, Timea Lashay Batts”, said a statement from the school system.

Police are working on getting access to inside the girl’s home.

At 8:30 p.m., police were still investigating inside the house.

“It sort of makes me a little bit concerned because this has been a really quiet neighborhood, a really safe neighborhood”, Stover said. “We are here to help”.

The victim has been identified at Timea Lashay Batts, a sixth grade student at Knox Doss Middle School at Drakes Creek, according to Sumner County Schools.
