In addition to the title change, American Made will be shifting from its original January 6, 2017 release date to Friday, September 29, 2017.

Déjà vu, then? Liman and Cruise have come back together for Mena, a new drama based on the story of Barry Seal.

Gary Spinelli (Stash House) wrote up the first draft of the script, but as final screenwriting credits have yet to be released, it’s possible that Edge of Tomorrow collaborator Christopher McQuarrie might pop in for another pass. Seal was involved with drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, and was recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency to run a massive covert operation, one that had major ramifications for Ronald Reagan’s White House.

Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment produces the project along with Quadrant Pictures’ Doug Davison, Cross Creek Pictures’ Tyler Thompson and Brian Oliver, and Kim Rot.

The film generated headlines previous year, when a plane carrying crew members crashed on the set in Colombia in September 2015, killing two people and seriously injuring a third person.

“On behalf of the production, our hearts and prayers go out to the crew members and their families at this hard time”, the studio commented at the time.
