Dennis was sentenced in 2005 to 25 years in prison and eight years of supervised released for possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The sentence was shortened to expire on December 1.

John Anthony Mickens, of Louisa, had been sentenced to 211 months’ imprisonment for conspiracy to distribute cocaine base and possession of a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking offense.

Most of those receiving commutations Wednesday will be released December 1. For 24 years the only way Lizette could see her mother was to visit her in federal prison.

With this latest round of commutations, President Obama has granted a total of 562 commutations.

Obama will be commuting the sentences of 214 federal inmates, including 67 serving life sentences.

Steen Jr. was sentenced to life in prison in 1993 for possession with intent to distribute a quantity of cocaine base.

Cynthia W. Roseberry, project manager for Clemency Project 2014, said Obama granted more commutations Wednesday alone than any president has granted during their entire time in office since the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson.

While his record of commutations puts US presidents from the last hundred-odd years to shame, law professors say they’re still not enough, considering Obama’s own outline for getting nonviolent offenders out of prison.

Another recipient, Debra Brown of Tennessee, was convicted of selling cocaine in 2002 and sentenced to 20 years.

“While we continue to work to act on as many clemency applications as possible, only legislation can bring about lasting change to the federal system”, Eggleston said.

Perez was convicted in U.S. District Court in Colorado and sentenced to a life term on April 19, 1996. This number surpasses the numbers of commutations by nine previous presidents combined.
