The death toll from the remnants of Hurricane Earl grows to more than 30 in Mexico as a new tropical storm forms off the country’s Pacific Coast.
Tropical Storm Javier is forecast to cross the mouth of the Gulf of California and then follow the west coast of Baja California. A hurricane watch and tropical storm warning was in effect for parts of the peninsula farther north.
In Puebla, where 28 died people died, Gov. Rafael Moreno Valle visited the areas affected by Tropical Storm Earl on Saturday, and has posted photos on his official Twitter account of some of the damage caused by the storm. The storm has downgraded, said experts, but its remnants will produce more rain over Mexican states such as Guerrero, Hidalgo, Puebla, Oaxaca, Tlaxcala and Veracruz.
At midday on Monday, Javier was about 55 miles (90 kms) southeast of Cabo San Lucas, a popular getaway for US visitors on the Baja California peninsula. It said a weakening trend should begin Tuesday afternoon.
Javier had sustained winds of about 50mph and was centred about 250 miles south-west of Cabo San Lucas.
Among the casualties of Earl, at least 32 people died in multiple mudslides in the mountainous north of Puebla state, said state interior secretary Diodoro Carrasco.
According to authorities, at least 10 shelters have been set up for evacuees from very low areas such as Cabo San Lucas.
Hurricane wind conditions can be expected in the extreme southern portion of Baja California Sur later today, said the NHC.
He said 25 of the dead were in various parts of the township of Huauchinango and three were in Tlaola.
In the town of Huauchinango, the amount of rain that normally falls in a month came pouring down in just 24 hours, the Puebla government said.

“It is a tragedy what has happened to our people in Huauchinango”, Gabriel Alvarado, mayor of the township of Huauchinango, said in a statement issued before the full death toll had been determined.
