Everton have offered in the region of £18m for the Ivory Coast defender, who cost the Black Cats just £5m from Lorient in January.

Stones’ £47.5 million, six-year switch to Manchester City was confirmed on Tuesday morning, after his name was included on a 21-man squad list the Etihad club submitted to UEFA ahead of their forthcoming Champions League campaign.

Everton are understood to have been impressed by the 27-year-old’s performances during Sunderland’s successful survival bid last term and have identified the former Lorient ace, as well as Swansea City captain Ashley Williams, as the ideal candidates to shore up a defence that has now lost John Stones.

Everton are in advanced talks to sign Sunderland defender Lamine Kone, sources close to the Merseyside club have told ESPN FC.

However, they have been in touch with the Black Cats over Kone and are aware what they would have to pay to land the Ivory Coast global, but there is no formal deal in place.

The trio would become the first major signings for new manager Ronald Koeman.

Naturally, this will leave Sunderland short of options at the back, and reports claim that Moyes is keen to address this by having Jagielka as part of any deal between the Black Cats and their domestic rivals.
