Canada defeats Britain in bronze medal match in women’s rugby sevens event

Alev Kelter scored a try for the USA just 15 seconds into the second half. “It wasn’t intentional, it was just a mistake, just a reaction, the ball was there”.

Tait added it was as much for the sport itself, as rugby sevens made its Olympic debut.

‘I don’t know what happened. “We weren’t at our best”.

“Langford and PISE have meant a lot to us and have been so important for the development of women’s rugby”, said veteran Canadian player Kelly Russell, after the medal ceremony.

Canada will be hard-pressed to advance to the quarter-finals as only the top four from each of the two pools qualify. Winger Jessica Jevelet scored two tries to give the Americans a 12-5 lead going into the last minute, but Emma Tonegato reached over to score her second try of the match for the Aussies and Chloe Dalton converted after the full-time siren for a draw.

Jevelet was again in the thick of it against New Zealand.

It wasn’t a game without controversy but she does not blame the referee.

Even without Woodman to start the second half, New Zealand seemed to have Australia pinned in its own half. So that just helped go into camp having that confidence, knowing that we can beat anybody at any given time. “It was a nice surprise, and hard”, Woodman said.

“We certainly up held the values of the Olympic movement, and rugby”, he said.

“But we’re in medal contention, so (we’re) excited”.

“It probably hurts right now because they’re out of medal contention, but still we have something to fight for”, Walker said.

“We accomplished our target, which was to finish ninth and play the Womens Series next year”, Brazilian rugby union president Eduardo Mufarej told AFP. But I love rugby to a level that it doesn’t really matter how high I get.

Australia coach Tim Walsh said the Americans gave his team “the kick up the trousers that we needed going into the quarterfinals”, where Charlotte Caslick scored twice and Tonegato added another to each increase their tournament tallies to six, equal with Woodman.

Great Britain’s struggles worsened in the second half, while Canada continued to get stronger, stuffing any offensive attacks their opponents attempted.

Canada’s women’s basketball team improved to 2-0 after rallying for an exciting 71-67 victory over Serbia. They’ll face the loser of the New Zealand-Britain semifinal in the bronze medal match later Monday. The Australians won the first three events of the World Series this season but were 29-19 by Canada in the fifth and final stop of the tour.

They were the better side in that game, they executed better than we did and they rightfully won that medal. “So we just wanted to end it by saying, ‘Hey, let’s go beat the Fijians.’ We hadn’t beaten them all year”.
