At least 19 people sick, possibly due to candy at birthday party

A total of 19 people have been hospitalized, including three children in intensive care, after apparently ingesting gummy candy containing a still-undetermined substance at a children’s party in San Francisco on Saturday, a fire department spokesman said.

Department of Public Health spokeswoman Rachael Kagan said they are testing all food eaten at the party to determine what made people sick. He told KTVU that symptoms included heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and swollen tongue.

Baxter said the Department of Public Health and San Francisco Police Department have not identified the substance as of early Sunday.

“All victims ate a candy that is described as a gummy ring type of a candy”, San Francisco Fire Department spokesman Jonathan Baxter told the Mission Local blog. The youngest victim was a 6-year-old child, and the 9-year-old child was the only one of the victims in critical condition.

Investigators are now working to determine where the sweets came from, and have interviewed several people who attended the party to learn more about what happened.

The health department is also contacting those who attended the party to tell them to discard any uneaten sweets they may have taken from there.
