Delta Air Lines to cancel nearly 250 flights

A power failure at Delta’s Atlanta base about 2:30 a.m. Monday shut down computer operations, prompting the carrier to scrap about 1,000 flights the same day.

In Little Rock, Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport listed Delta flights to Atlanta and Detroit as canceled Tuesday morning.

Thousand of flights were also delayed on Monday and more wait time was expected Tuesday.

Although the airline was back online late on Monday, it was still dealing with the knock-on effects a day later.

More than 1,000 people spent the night at Narita airport outside Tokyo because of the computer shutdown that halted Delta Air Lines flights worldwide.

Delta extended its travel waiver to customers traveling Tuesday.

Delta is offering a $200 voucher to anyone whose flight was scrapped or delayed three hours or more. Delta attributed it to a power outage, though Georgia Power said it is was mostly likely an internal computer glitch.

In July the average Delta flight was 87 percent full, news agency AP reported.

The airline said it canceled around 1,000 flights Monday.

Passengers packed the boarding area at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas following Monday’s Delta outage.

A statement on Delta’s website however indicated that, “Following the power loss, some critical systems and network equipment didn’t switch over to Delta’s backup systems”.

We’re getting more insight into what caused Delta’s computer system outage. The power company noted that Delta was the only customer affected by this so-called outage.

Passengers are also being provided with hotel rooms and other accommodation if a cancellation requires an overnight stay.

During the ground stop, those flights already in the air safely reached their destinations.

Last year, United and American Airlines both suffered computer problems.

They’ve now seen how easy it is to cripple an entire airline and that should concern all of us.

Ryan Shannon, whose flight from Lexington, Kentucky, on Monday was delayed, said passengers boarded, were told to exit, waited about 90 minutes, then got back on the plane and flew to NY without further incident.

Lines for British Airways at some airports have grown longer as the carrier updates its systems.
