Dolphins’ Tannehill says he’s ready to ‘demand excellence’

Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase will figure out this week how many snaps to give his veterans in Friday’s first preseason game. “I think I have the credibility now to pretty much demand excellence out of these guys”.

“It irritates me”, Gase said. The last time these two teams played, in a Monday night game played in Miami on December 14, 2015, the Giants beat the Dolphins 31-24, according to the Pro Football Reference website. All three levels got only one first down total, when quarterback Ryan Tannehill completed a pass to receiver Griff Whalen. That’s what it comes down to – coming out, pushing the tempo, pushing each other and executing. I think it’s like 22 [padded practices] for the whole year. This past weekend, the Miami Dolphins were given the opportunity to show what they really had to the coaching staff during the team’s inter-team scrimmage. (We are) still going through some of the thinking.

Overall, the defense has bullied the offense in training camp, with Saturday’s scrimmage the low point for the offense. We’ll keep looking at that. “I think he was more focused on our group, just really preaching what we’ve been talking about like sticking with our process, positive plays (and) getting completions”.

“I think our offense looks good with or without me. I felt I saw some growth there as far as his personality coming out and taking control of the offense”.

The offense spent the day with numerous passes remaining short, safe options, with the majority of the passing offense clearly targeting Jarvis Landry.

“It’s part of my role to push the guys around me to be the best they can be. I just really don’t know”. He does his job right and the coverage seems to take Ryan (Tannehill) there a lot of times. You don’t go out here and say, ‘It’s going to be a stalemate, this is going to happen.

Tannehill is still more comfortable throwing to wide receiver Jarvis Landry, not spreading the ball as consistently to tight end Jordan Cameron, Stills, or fellow wide receiver DeVante Parker, who returned to practice Tuesday after missing four days with a hamstring injury. “It was good in the fact that I know he’s been driving (Wide Receivers Coach) Shawn Jefferson insane as far as ‘Why won’t they let me back out?'” Gase said of Parker’s return. I just told them just be ready to go (and we’ll) ee how it goes.

“I’m not going to get into what I said, but everyone already knew that it wasn’t acceptable how we came out and practiced”, Tannehill said.

“It’s nice to have DeVante back”, Tannehill added.

It was good enough to prompt celebrations from the defensive players. It appears that Gase wants to make Tunsil earned the starting job at guard instead of just place him first on the depth chart.

The Dolphins are heading to my hometown of NY this week, to face the Giants on Friday, August 12th at 7PM, so the offense will soon get the opportunity to redeem themselves against former Dolphin, Olivier Vernon, and his new teammates.
