Photo of Clinton having trouble with stairs fuels rumors of bad health

Clinton slipped on some stairs while campaigning in SC ahead of the February 27 primary – that much is true.

In her presidential bid, Hillary Clinton has made job creation a centerpiece of her platform, casting herself as a pragmatist who would inspire “the biggest investment in new, good-paying jobs since World War II”. Neither the original article nor The Drudge Report had been amended to note that the photo was over six months old, or that the caption on the image said that she had simply slipped.

Photos of the awkward entrance were published right afterward by two wire services, Reuters and Getty.

Mainstream media quickly dismissed the charge that the pictures are evidence of a health issue as a “conspiracy theory”, with CNN senior media correspondent Brian Stelter tweeting, “The photo is from February 24”.

Clinton’s health has been a subject of consistent scrutiny since 2012, with conservative commenters calling out an on-camera coughing fit as a sign that the 68-year-old may be physically unfit to hold office. “Many promised jobs never materialized and others migrated to other states as she turned to her first presidential run…data shows that upstate actually lost jobs during Clinton’s first term, ‘” Trump cited. “But given all the past chatter about her physical condition, the message from the pro-Trump accounts was clear: Clinton can barely walk”. “As for the timing of the photos and my writing about them, as Hillary Clinton said, ‘What difference, at this point, does it make?’ The broader point is that she appears to have issues and Americans deserve to know about them”.

Jobs data show that job growth stagnated in Upstate New York during her eight years in office, the report said, and manufacturing jobs dropped by almost a quarter.

The Drudge Report doesn’t hide its conservative bent.

As of Monday morning, the Drudge coverage and the American Mirror blog post still had not been updated to reflect the actual age of the photo.
