The airline is also offering compensation to customers who have been significantly affected by delays and cancellations.
Many passengers were frustrated that they received no notice of a global disruption, discovering that they were stranded only after making it through security and seeing other passengers sleeping on the floor. The airline grounded departing flights worldwide after suffering a major system outage Monday.
“Delta probably had some kind of catastrophic failure that took everything, even their backup systems offline, which left them dead”, Pearcy said.
Tuesday’s challenge is finding enough seats on planes during the busy summer vacation season to accommodate the tens of thousands of passengers whose flights were scrubbed.
The largest US airlines – which account for about 85 percent of domestic air traffic – are required to report on-time performance for each flight to the government each month, and to disclose that information on their websites and to travel agencies.
The airline posted a video apology by CEO Ed Bastian. Delta is waiving certain change fees for customers who were scheduled to travel Monday or Tuesday and want to change their travel plans to later in the week.
FlightStats, a flight tracking services, tallied nearly another 600 delayed flights as Delta tried to help out tens of thousands of passengers whose travel plans were disrupted.
Anyone traveling Tuesday should check the status of their flight before heading to the airport. “The company could have done a better job of explaining. what was happening”.
The company, which has not yet detailed the financial impact of the outage, said on its website that as of 11:30 a.m., it had canceled about 530 flights, while about 1,600 had departed.
While the company says the issue was caused by a power outage, some reports claim the cause was a fire in the data center.
Harteveldt says Delta has been rebuilding its core technologues for more than six months.
During the ground stop, those flights already in the air safely reached their destinations.
Officials with the airline said Delta was still in “recovery mode” after canceling 1,000 flights Monday.
Delta Air Lines Inc. ranks as the third-largest in the world by number of passengers carried, with 138.8 million travelers previous year, according to industry group IATA.
That has afflicted airlines in the United States and overseas.
Lines for British Airways at some airports have grown longer as the carrier updates its systems.
Agents at many airports were using pen and paper to create boarding passes.

Robby Cooper said, “I made it here to Des Moines and got stuck for the night, and got up this morning to come here and fly out at 5:40 but I just saw I’m on another flight at 8 a.m.so we’ll see what happens”. Delta runs about 15,000 flights a day along with its alliance partners.
